DoD Ponds is one of the gems of south Jersey. it's close enough to home but gives the feeling of true wilderness. there are a number of animals out there and it's a great place for rescue practice day (nice clean water!). |

It's pretty here, but I would not feel safe coming here alone. Also drive slowly. The potholes are bad. |

DOD Ponds has a lot going for it. It's easy to get to, friendly to new paddlers, and packed with wildlife. One of my favorite spots. |

It was easy to get to and find. Also, it was clean and more than adequate for the learning experience. |

The DOD ponds is a terrific flat water paddle. Very inviting, very enjoyable for any level of experience. You can really lose yourself in the cattails and forget that you are in the shadow of Philadelphia. Oh, yeah, and the beavers were really cool. |

The road drive/road leading to the launch site is crummy - rocky, dirt road - not good on the shocks! But the paddle is well worth the drive through. This is an amazing paddle for the critter watchers - there are marshie places where one can just sit and take in the wildlife. There are pretty big fish out in the ponds. Parts of it are very shallow, but some parts are fairly deep. You'll see several species of turtles, frogs galore and of course "The Swan Family." You'll see various kinds of herons (blue, green, multi-colored and Great Blue), egrets an osprey or two and yes, even a bald eagle if you're lucky. DOD ponds is also famous for its beaver population! Dusk is the best time to see the beavers! |
