I am truly drooling........But my budget is officially closed, for now, against anymore kayaks! One can always dream, however. Steve Fries

Great, now I am pondering if I can build a wood kayak in my garage or basement, and if I have room to store it, and if I want a fast and tippy boat to add to the collection. Just what I need, another project...

C'mon Jason, you know you love projects!

Chesapeake light craft sells pre-cut kits, and has boat-building classes every summer. I know Meri is very interested in building one for herself. One week of building with them and you have a finished boat, you'll just need to add the lacquer when you get home.

I was looking through their kits today, they have a few models that interest me. I would build it at hoe on my own since I never would have a week to spare to go somewhere to build travel somewhere to build a boat. It would be nice to have a faster boat for use on calm lakes, and a bit narrower then the Tsunami (which I find I am not fitting in as well as I would like, to prevent problems with circulation I need to have my legs fairly straight, but then I don't have contact with the thigh pads as they are currently installed). The kits that interest me the most, in order are:

Stitch and Glue Night Heron

West River 18

Shearwater 17 Hybrid

I think I can get an 18 foot kayak out of my basement, if that is where I do construction, without needing to go through a window or put a hole in a wall, but it would be tricky with angles. My sunroom is definitely large enough for storage/display, and the garage should have a foot to spare for storage as well. You don't realize just how big an 18 foot kayak is until you start to look at room measurements.

My son built two strippers a few years ago and documented the entire process at http://www.pete-and-l... for those who want an idea of what it involves.

Please do NOT send him emails, as Pete died from cancer in May and communications would further upset Lisa.
