We are planning a trip up to the Lehigh, going to check the flow, then paddle from Jim Thorpe downstream 2 - 3 hours. From what I remember that is an easy beginner paddle.
Anyone like to join us? We do not have a set date and time. Likely will be during the week, and likely to be one weeks from this coming Weds/Thurs. Drop us a line if you are interested! Would be cool (boy) if someone (boy) with roof racks were to wanna come (boy) along...I promise, it will be an easy run. No rodeo antics. Also making a run to Scudder's Falls between now and then(boy). Just as committed on the dates, we are pretty loose on the schedule. Andrew, Dawn and the gang at Hawk's Nest Stable |

Haha, I'd be very interested to join you guys, but I currently have no roof racks at all! Meri and Hack will be in Maine, so I'll be running trips by myself.
I know that the Lehigh River is a very easy run below the Gorge. Do you have a put in and take out in mind? I can schedule this trip for the Wednesday of next week. |

It is an easier run than anything upstream. However, watch out for the set of rapids just downstream of the bridge in JT - they are the hardest on the stretch, and there is a monster rock right in the center that loves eating boats.

I was going to head up this week to scout the take out points. Its been years since I have been up there, and my memory ain't what it used to be.
I did paddle from Jim Thorpe down once, years ago...and it was my oldest son's first time on WW. He did fine, and this will be a good start. We will see who pops up, and handle the transportation. Worst case is I will carry all the boats up, and we can play automobile shuffle when we get there. |

Just did that run 2 weeks ago from Glen Onoko. Just past Jim Thorpe is a nice rapid called Crab Trap with a small hole in the middle. Some small rapids till you hit Dunbars just past the railroad trestle. Good place to practice peel outs and eddy turns. Past Weisport to Bowmanstown is a hell of a rapid called Carnage. You can guess the rest from the name. Nice take out at Bowmans town though.

You can use Blue Mtn. Sports for the shuttle. I'm heading up Aug. 1.

Hey Mike, want to be an event organizer for that one? ^_^
edit: Let me contact BMO and see what they charge for a shuttle (and if they recommend any particular put-ins or take-outs.) Edited by Boy on Jul 20, 2010 8:04 AM |

FYI
Aug. 1 is a scheduled dam release. My group is putting in at Rockport, out at Glen Onoko. They might be willing to add 3-5 folks who have some WW experience as it will be a challenge (possible danger) for novices. Edited by Mike on Jul 21, 2010 8:08 AM |

FYI Ahh, that's Lehigh Gorge, a much different story than the lower Lehigh River. The earlier trip I was talking about was Class I (basically flatwater), while Rockport to Glen Onoko is class II with a few II+/III features. |
