The weather is almost spring-like! I am dying to get out on the water since I have been unable to make the past few events. If you want to get out on the water for a bit in a beautiful, protected area, meet us at the DOD Ponds at 5pm for an hour or so of paddling. The Ponds are home to tons of wildlife, including a variety of waterfowl and a family of beavers.

We'll launch at 5pm, but since we're on a lake you are welcome to show up a little later and just paddle out to find us. This paddle is suitable for ALL levels of paddler, but because of the cold water, appropriate cold water gear (wetsuit/drysuit/dry gear) and PFDs are REQUIRED.

Directions:
Take 130 South past the Comm. Barry Bridge. Cross Raccoon Creek and Oldmans Creek. Eventually you will see an old Army base on the right that is now an eco-industrial park. Immediately after this base, there is a brown wooden sign on the right for the DOD Ponds. Turn right onto the dirt road, follow it up the hill and make the first right after the top of the hill to reach the beach where we launch.

Right, didn't get a chance to check the Ponds yesterday, but I'm gonna cross my fingers that they are clear of ice. If anyone wants to check in with me at the Ponds before heading out, my # is [masked]. I think we'll be fine, tho.

Hey Meri. My new kayak, your new kayak, race at sunset. Loser has to unload the boats by themselves.

Gooooooooood question. Stewart lake is clear so I was assuming DOD was as well - but perhaps I'll make a quick run down there today to make sure.

Is DOD Ponds thawed out? I know some lakes are clear (tiny Smithville Lake is clear), others are still frozen (Lake Mercer was still 95% iced over on Sunday). Of course, with the nicely warm weather things should be thawing quickly. My yard is almost completely snow free now!

A beautiful evening with a great paddle, definitely the right way to end the day.
    •  What a great night for a paddle. I didn't think there were new areas to find at DOD pond. It was a lovely evening paddling with the otters.
    •  It was a beautiful night on the water. The Ponds were great fun as usual. The swans were out, as well as quite a few geese getting ready to nest. The beavers have made a new lodge, and we even spotted several otters! I had a lovely time both playing with my new boat and catching up with friends.
