Are you new to kayaking? Want to learn a little more about the basics? Curious about different types of boats? Have some questions you want to ask about kayaking or the group itself? This is the event for you!

Come on out to Parvin Lake for a day geared just for you, whether you have your own boat and want to brush up on some of the basics, or you are still deciding on what boat to get. Rental boats will be available through Al & Sam's at the lake, and we'll have several different types of boats available for you to demo if you are curious.

We'll meet at Fisherman's Landing. At 1pm, we'll start with an off-water discussion about the necessary gear and goodies needed for entry level kayaking. We'll also discuss basic safety issues.

Next, we'll discuss some of the basic boat types, and have a variety of our personal boats available for you to test paddle. This is a good way to get a feel for different types of boats and can help you decide what type to look for if you are still shopping around.

After the demos, we'll spend some time on the water going over basic strokes and kayaking form. Those who do not have their own boats yet can rent from Al & Sam's.

This is, obviously, a beginner friendly paddle for all levels. If you are an experienced kayaker, feel free to join us to help out and share your knowledge.

If you are planning to rent a boat, please contact Al & Sam's ahead of time to reserve one.

Map of launch site. Please note - Fisherman's Landing is on Parvin Mill Road, it's the park offices that are on Almond Road. Please meet us at the Landing on Parvin Mill Road.

We will start promptly at 1pm, please allow time to find parking and unload any boats and gear you may have before the event time.

The water will still be a bit chilly, so please bring a dry set of clothes and a towel, just in case. :)

Questions or problems the day of the event? Contact me at [masked].

just spoke to the rental place - they said we need to paddle from their spot to the Meetup spot. They will give some initial paddle instruction for anyone who has never paddled.

For renters: Cheryl recommends coming at 12:00 to get the boat ready at the Almond Road Entrance. The rental cost is $12 with group discounted rate for two hours or $20 for three hours. They will close at 5 p.m. so you can also rent additional hours before they close.

Looks like we will have great weather for this! We'll be bringing a bunch of boats for you to try out, and a lot of gear as well. If you are planning to rent, don't forget to contact Al & Sam's ahead of time. The boat rental is across the lake from where we are meeting, so plan to either arrive early and paddle over to Fisherman's Landing, or to pick up your boat after the demo and discussion.

    •  Many thanks to Meri & the crew, for all that you guys do!
    •  I appreciate the time and patience that everyone took with us "newbies" today. The weather was beautiful and it was a fun day onthe water. My apologies to everyone I accidentally hit with the boat :-)
    •  I saw people I knew an met some new people. I had a nice ride on the lake; very pleasant experience in the company of nice people who share the same interests.

Good to see everyone...from brand newbie to Meri....beginners...if you keep coming out with us, you won't be a beginner at the next beginner day in May (deep thoughts)
    •  It was a beautiful day on Lake Parvin! I really enjoyed learning about the different types of kayaks, and I'm sold on getting a tsunami . . . someday! I also enjoyed the paddling tips. I was impressed by the professionalism, friendliness, and knowledge of Meri and her team. Great job!!!
    •  What an awesome day. Thanks, everyone, for coming out and listening to me ramble about boats. :) We had a great turnout of both experienced and beginner kayakers, and I hope everyone had a good time. We'll be holding the next Beginner day in May, so come join us!

So good to be back on the water! Thanks for putting this together - a lot of great info. My friend, Stacie is hooked and I have recruits for the next one!
    •  The intent of the group was to provide new paddlers to the sport. It was to give them an opportunity to understand the basics with an emphasis towards safety. The casual setting allowed for open dialogue which enhanced the participation.
    •  Good afternoon; Parvin was busy with a lot of fishermen and newbie paddlers!! The orientation from Meri, Boy, Hack & Scott was very informative! Nicely done, and I am sure everyone appreciated the basics.
