Come visit the Fish Factory with us! This is an amazing trip; we had a great time paddling out there in the fall and can't wait to go back again.

THE FISH FACTORY OF THE GREAT BAY
Like the hollowed out carcass of a long dead giant beast, a lonely fish processing plant stands on an island in Ocean County’s Great Bay. It is known locally simply as the “Fish Factory.” Its original name was the Crab Island Fish Factory, though the marsh island on which it is located is officially known as Fish Island. In its heyday the plant was used to process menhaden, or moss bunker, a small oily fish in the herring family. Considered a low-grade fish unfit for human consumption, bunker are netted by the ton along the Atlantic coast. They are then ground up to make products such as fish meal, fish oil, fertilizer, bait and pet food. The ruined facility has stood abandoned since the collapse of the local fishery some time back around 1972.

Read more about the Fish Factory here.

We'll be launching at Captain Mike's Marina and paddling out across the bay to the island where the Fish Factory is located. This is an open water crossing and is NOT suitable for beginner paddlers - Intermediate and above only please. It can be a challenging crossing if the wind kicks up. No boats under 12 feet, please. PFDs are REQUIRED.

The Great Bay is also part of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge - you'll see tons of waterfowl and other wildlife. There will be power boats out on the bay, so be prepared to ride some wakes! Pack a lunch, and we'll stop to eat, explore, and photograph at the Fish Factory.

Kayaks can be rented from the marina, but they only have 3 non-tandem kayaks suitable for this trip. They are first come, first serve. Contact the marina ahead of time if you wish to reserve a kayak for this trip. If Mike's rentals are all taken, you can also rent from West Creek Kayaks - [masked] - but may need to transport the kayaks to Mike's on your own.

There is a small fee for us to launch from Mike's - $5 per car.

Sprayskirts are strongly recommended for this trip.

As always, you can reach me the day of the event at 856 308 1974.
Any changes or cancellations due to inclement weather will be made by 9am the morning of the trip. Please check this page before you head out in the morning.

Just an FYI......Little Egg Harbor comes up as Tuckerton, NJ on Google Maps, even when you look up Capt Mike's. So, if you are using a GPS, and cannot find the address in LEH, try Tuckerton.

Gonna be a great day! Don't forget - no boats under 12 feet as this is an open water crossing. Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended. You might want to consider boots and/or long pants as poison ivy on the island may be an issue. Also, there's a parking fee at the marina so bring some cash. See you all there!!!!!

IT looks like tomorrow is going to be beautiful. 88 degrees and full sun, which means DON'T FORGET SUN SCREEN. The burn index out on the water tomorrow will be very high.

Barb, we'll be out several hours. It's a fairly short paddle to the factory itself, but we usually spend a couple hours exploring and take a lunch break before heading back. A lot will also depend on how much paddling around the island we do. Sorry I can't be more specific, there's just a lot of variables.

    •  Very cool trip! I loved exploring the Fish Factory & hunting for treasures on the shore. Beautiful day all around! Thanks Meri and everyone in the DVK!

AWESOME!!! What an AWESOME day! I loved this paddle. The Fish factory was cool to walk around, and all of the neat things laying on its shores. We had a great paddle around the island itself, and then back to captian Mikes. great, great day!
    •  great day, great company, nice to be paddling salt water again.thanks to the organizers for another nice trip.On a hunch i looked up materials used for seeding new oyster beds and found out that porcelain shards are used when old oyster shells are not available. That may explain what we found on fish island today.
    •  This was day with warm sun, a cool breeze, pleasant water with the tide going with you all the way. The people were great and I had the chance to use my longer boat due to the channel crossing. Powerboats were nearby but caused no problems for us. There was a lot of poison ivy around the Fish factory and hopefully no one will have a reaction to this. A physical injury, a cut on someone's hand was quickly taken care of by the organizers and all was well for the rest of the day. This was a great day.

What a gorgeous day! The bird life was astounding and abounding! Saw American Oystercatchers, Peregrine Falcon, Osprey galore, Willets, Cormorants, Eastern Towhee, Common Yellowthroat Great Black Back Gull (Imperial Dump Buzzard), Laughing Gull, Forster's Terns, Turkey Vulture to name but a few. It was a great paddle! Thanks to Meri for organizing and to Boy and Victor for running interference for us all on the power boats! I'm still bobbing up and down!

Great workout...even better weather. The long arse ride was WELL worth it..and i finally found a tick in my shirt...i felt left out before that. Thx as always Ms. Meri/Boy etc.
    •  Could not have asked for a better day! Lots of sun, nice and warm, and only a light breeze. We had a swift crossing across calm waters to the Factory and spent some time exploring. I think fall will be a better time to plan a re-visit, as the poison ivy and ticks were out in full force. We still had a wonderful time exploring the ruins and spotting osprey and other sea birds. Finished up circumnavigating the island which was larger than we expected! Got a nice workout as the tide started to turn, and then got to relax running with the tide down the far side again. Had a great time with everyone, thanks for coming out!

What a beautiful day to explore the Great Bay! Winds and current were not bad, and really not much boat traffic so it was a pretty smooth ride! One thing that has to go is th POISON IVY! The Island was covered...I hope no one is splotched up!
    •  This was so much fun. It was my first time in salt water and it was awesome. I will admit that I was a little nervous, but Meri and Boy led a great trip. I just want to thank everyone on the trip for making me feel so comfortable constantly doing new things in a kayak.
    •  The weather and company was 100%, had a Great time
