This month we're off to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands in Virginia. These islands were made famous by the Misty of Chincoteague books. Assateague Island is a national wildlife refuge, and home to several herds of wild ponies. In addition to some fabulous kayaking, there are also hiking and biking trails on Assateague as well as miles of gorgeous beaches and the lighthouse on the island. Chincoteague hosts a quaint seaside town with lots of shops and seafood restaurants.

We'll be staying at Pine Grove Campground on Chincoteague Island. Plan to arrive on Friday, May 21 and depart on Sunday May 23. Friday we will set up camp - the campsite also has cabins and trailers for rent if you don't have a tent. Saturday we'll set out to paddle around Assateague and look for ponies. In the evening, join us for the pot luck dinner!

Sunday morning we can fit in another paddle before packing up and heading home.

This campground is supposedly pet friendly, but I recommend checking with them when you reserve your site to be sure.

My friend just canceled and I'm hoping to find someone to carpool with. I can drive and carry another kayak. Will be bringing my dog. Took off Friday and want to be set up before dark fri night. I'm in ne phila but can meet along the way. Since I have the dog, campground is letting me have 2 tents on 1 site so that would save you $. Hopefully, someone will join me.

Question: do we know of a place there to rent a kayak. One of my friends is interested. When she talked to the campsite, they recommended the Chamber of Commerce. I was wondering if we already knew of someplace.

We will be around and dinner out could be an option. NEver been down there either but I hope if we ask the ppl at the campground, they could recommend somewhere.

We will also be bringing card games if people are interested in playing some games. Gary also is bringing Horseshoes *laff*

I plan on arriving about 3:00ish on Friday. Anyone interested in meeting for dinner someplace overlooking the water? A few people from the M&BCHG will be joining me as well. If anyone knows of a place, please feel free to share any info. 1st timer at CI so open to suggestions. Also, in case anyone didn't know the campground does not provide grills, I just checked w/ them today.

Not sure of location yet - we have several options. There is supposedly a launch right by the campground, or we can head over to Tom's Cove on Assateague. Recommend meeting at the campground at 10am on Saturday and we'll go from there as a group. Low tide is at 9am, so by ten the changeover should be starting and we'll be able to enjoy the rising tide wherever we paddle.

Hate to be a nudge but any idea of put-in location and approximate time we'll be paddling on Saturday? Have a friend who's kayaking but not camping. Thanks

Everyone in my little subgroup (daughter and 3 friends) had a great time on the water and around the campsite. The paddle was thoughtfully organized to make it work for novices like my daughter and myself. It was great having help getting the boat to and from the launch site. It was a nice opportunity to see people I had already met on a prior meetup and many new ones. As far as I could tell, it was a huge success.
    •  A wonderful weekend! The weather stayed nice, the campground (except the noisy peacocks) was great, and we had a fantastic paddle around the islands. We spotted osprey, ponies, tons of shore birds, and even the endangered Delmarva Fox Squirrel. Can't wait to go back again. What a great group to paddle with!

Phenomenal! Despite the peacocks :) You guys are so easy to hang with...thanks for the memories.
    •  Fabulous weekend!!! 23 kayaks (2 tandems) made Little Oyster and Big Oyster Bays look quite colorful! About 7 of us continued up Assateague Channel and found several horsed in the horse marsh, just past the lighthouse. It was really grand to see. I think we need to get Boy a pet peacock...he really loved that bird!!!
