Come on out an join us for our season kickoff at Bull's Island on the Delaware River! This is one of our favorite campgrounds, with sites for both tents and RVs. We'll arrive on Friday the 16th and set up camp before spending an evening around the campfire. Saturday morning we'll head up river to launch and have a leisurely paddle back down to the island. Saturday night, join us for our traditional pot luck dinner and more campfire fun. Sunday morning, those feeling up to it can paddle some more before heading home.

I'll talk to the campground and try to arrange a block of sites for us as usual.

If you are unable to stay for the weekend, feel free to join us just for Saturday! Please indicate when you RSVP if you plan to attend for the entire weekend or just Saturday.

We'll have several paddle options for Saturday's paddle. Those wanting a shorter paddle can do the Kingwood launch to Bull's Island, and those who want a longer paddle can put in at Milford, or even a bit further up. We'll finalize details a little closer to the date. See you there!

Bull's Island Website

RSVPs close on Tuesday April 13, 2010 at 10:00am.

****UPDATE****
River Routes:

We'll have two options for routes on Saturday.
Those wanting a shorter run will be dropped off at Kingwood Access for a 7 mile float down to Bull's Island. - About a 2-3 hour run depending on current and paddle speed.
Those wanting a longer run will continue up to Lock #20 on the PA Side (16 miles). - About 5-6 hours depending on current and paddle speed.

We will leave the campground for the launch sites NO LATER THAN 9am so we can launch by 10.
Those camping out Friday night, we'll have a short meeting around 8pm Friday to consolidate boats and set up carpooling. All boats and gear should be loaded and ready to roll by 9am.
Those meeting us on Saturday, please be at the campground by 8:30am.
We will arrange a shuttle for both runs.

Both trips are easy runs and suitable for all boat types and skill levels. However, the longer paddle is just that - LONGER, and will require fairly steady paddling for most of it.

Sunday we will probably do the Kingwood-> Bull's Island run for anyone who wants a short paddle before we leave.

Looks like you had a nice day/some-what blue skies. Wish I was there.

I knew we were in trouble when smoke started pouring out of the rice and beans I was preparing for the potluck. Now, with the questionable weather, the possibility of shortening the trip (and Helen's accident!), I'm afraid I'm going to bag it. You guys are tough as nails! Carry on the good work, and I'll try to see you for Juniata if not sooner.

Due to weather concerns, tomorrow's long paddle may begin at upper black eddy instead.

We have lots of poles, ropes, bungees and tent stakes. We normally set up a 30' x 40' tarp (tent city) when we camp. I may have thrown the tarp away last year after a storm played hell with it, but we will have all of the above items with us.

Just a thought, we have an awning on the camper for when it is wet but warm, and I have a tarp I can bring, does anyone have any rope or poles so we can make a covered area to hang out in?

Hopefully the rain this week and Friday will help with river conditions :)

We'll be paddling Saturday rain or shine (barring thunderstorms or other unsafe conditions) so be sure to bring some rain gear in case!

I'd just like to remind people that Bulls Island is a state park and as such alcohol is not allowed. That said, if you have it in plastic cups we haven't had a problem.

Victor - thinking of doing two runs so ppl have a choice. One from Upper Black Eddy area to the island, and then a longer one farther up. Need to sit down with my maps and decide where tho.

If you have tunes that you'd like to hear at the potluck/campfire...put them on a flash drive/ SD or micro SD card or CD, and bring them with you...give them to me when you get there (nothing too loud ;)) ....better yet guitar player

Is there a kayak rental nearby? I don't have a kayak or a car rack.

    •  Even the Friday night rains and cool temps didn't stop us from enjoying a great season opener. Great pot-luck dinner around a blazing camp fire on Saturday. Water was fast and I'm told by my wife (Mrs. Chris) it was very cold also! ;-)

A little rain didn't dampen things (except a little sleep) and the paddle was great...the company and food too...great campfires
    •  Not even the rain Friday night could dampen our spirits! Although the wind and the doom-n-gloom clouds called for a slightly shorter paddle than originally planned, we had a lovely afternoon on the river. Lots of folks both old and new turned out for the paddle. The river was running nice and fast and we made great time. The pot luck dinner Saturday night was delicious - thanks to all who contributed!!! Can't wait for the next camping trip!

Well in true DVK fashion we had rain....But it was a GREAT paddle today! Thanks to everyone who came out, suck around, and brought food for the potluck dinner!

My daughter and I enjoyed the paddle on Saturday though wish it could have been longer. Everyone one was very friendly and helpful.
