DATE CHANGE DUE TO WEATHER. NEW DATE JANUARY 10.

Happy New Year! Let's celebrate the beginning of the new year with a paddle on one of our favorite local rivers. We'll be launching from the Kingwood access and paddling down to Bull's Island. This is an easy trip that should run about 2 hours or so depending on the current and water levels.

This is a Beginner skill level trip, HOWEVER - cold water gear (wetsuit or drysuit) and PFDs are MANDATORY.

We will meet at Kingwood access at 11:30am. We'll unload boats and gear, then run most of the vehicles down to Bull's Island for when we finish. Launch time will be around noon.

I can be reached the day of the event at [masked]

I haven't been out in temperatures this cold, but I find the pogies to be surprisingly warm. When out in the temps in the low 30s they were actually uncomfortably warm at times, but my hands are naturally warm. I have more trouble keeping my feet warm, especially when paddling. Tomorrow I will be trying some neoprene boots in addition to my wool socks and dry suit to keep my toes toasty.

My first cold water paddle too, and I think I've got the gear figured out -- except the hands. I have hydroskin gloves, but they are thin and seem inadequate for 20 degree temps. Also have pogies, but same question. Enuf for these temps? What do you guys use when it's this cold?

(Of course, those are the conditions today, Sunday could be different, but unlikely)

The Delaware is ice-free at least up to the Kingwood launch, even the canal is essentially ice-free (saw a little skin of ice in places). Bulls Island is closed (bridge construction, can only access the canal at the little lot next to Rt. 29), but the boat launch just upriver from it is open (the launch we used for the June Delaware paddle). Kingwood is open, the road down to the launch has a couple of ice patches, but the ramp itself is clear.

Victor - snow is no problem, my only concern is the wind forecast. I'll keep an eye on it and let everyone know by the night before.

David - yes. Polar bear or not, cold water gear is required at this time of year. :)

Is my manatee to small for this?

True, tho depending on the water levels and if the far end of the island is open, we can also shoot the wing dam and pull out just past the foot bridge.

Lest we forget...gate is locked at Bulls Island...have to pull out sooner. I almost died last year paddling against the current to get to the north side of the canal!!

    •  It was so nice to get back on the water again! Although we had to make a change of route plans due to ice at the original take out, we had a lovely run from Upper Black Eddy down to Kingwood. We found a new launch site on the PA side, and also had a lovely lunch in Frenchtown after the paddle. Thanks everyone for coming out!

Surprisingly clear conditions, considering all the ice we saw downstream. A great winter paddle, and now we know another launch for a longer Delaware River run.
    •  We had a great time. Even though it was about 25 degrees out, it felt like 70. Beautiful weather and good company.
    •  Even though the original take-out was iced over, Meri was quick thinking enough to find a put-in up river and save the day. It was a very friendly and fun experience.
